What is luxury vinyl plank?

Luxury vinyl plank, or LVP, is a manufactured floor designed to recreate the appearance of wood. The wood grain you see is a printed design beneath a clear protective wear layer. It offers a wood look without a real wood surface.

How it is constructed and made

Manufacturers combine a backing, a vinyl or composite core, a decorative image and a transparent wear layer. Surface treatments and embossing can add texture and protection. Layers are bonded together, then cut into planks. Click-lock products have shaped edges that connect neighboring boards; some flexible products are glued down. An attached pad is included on some styles, but not all.

Where does SPC fit in?

SPC is one type of rigid-core luxury vinyl. Its dense core typically blends mineral filler with polymers for rigidity. LVP describes the plank format; SPC describes a core construction, so a floor can be both. Compare the specific product’s wear layer, locking system, comfort and installation requirements rather than choosing by acronym alone.

Why homeowners choose it

LVP offers many colors and plank sizes and is generally straightforward to clean. Many products have waterproof planks, making them worth considering for spaces with everyday spills. That does not make the entire room or subfloor waterproof: seams, perimeter details and moisture underneath still matter.

What to consider before choosing

Scratch-resistant does not mean scratch-proof. Furniture pads, entry mats and routine grit removal help protect the finish. A flat, sound subfloor is essential, even with a rigid core. Ask about approved rooms, direct sunlight, moisture testing and whether additional underlayment is allowed.
