What is engineered hardwood?

Engineered hardwood has a real wood surface bonded to a supporting core. The visible grain and natural variation come from wood, rather than a printed picture. It is different from solid hardwood, which is made from one piece of wood through its thickness.

How it is constructed and made

Manufacturers cut a wood face layer and bond it to supporting layers or a composite wood core. In many plywood-core products, adjacent layers run in different grain directions to improve dimensional stability. Boards are pressed, shaped at their edges and often finished at the factory. Core construction, surface thickness and finishes vary by product.

Why the layers matter

The supporting structure helps manage natural wood movement as conditions change. Engineered construction does not eliminate that movement or make ordinary wood flooring waterproof. Indoor humidity, subfloor moisture and the installation method remain important.

Why homeowners choose it

Real grain, knots and color differences give each board character. Engineered hardwood can suit living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms when the product and site conditions are appropriate. Species, board width, sheen and surface texture offer different design effects.

Can engineered hardwood be refinished?

Sometimes, but never assume it can. Sanding depends on the usable wood thickness, construction, surface texture, condition and manufacturer’s instructions. Some products cannot be sanded. A professional must assess the exact floor before recommending refinishing; a maintenance recoat is a different process.

Questions to bring to your consultation

What species and face-layer thickness are we comparing? Which installation method is approved for our subfloor? What humidity range is required? What are the approved cleaning and repair options? We can review the product details with your room and lifestyle in mind.
