What is carpet?

Carpet is a textile floor covering made from yarn attached to a backing. Its comfort, appearance and performance depend on the fiber, yarn twist, pile construction and cushion working together. A thicker-feeling sample is not automatically the most durable option.

How it is constructed and made

Most carpet is tufted: machinery pushes rows of yarn through a primary backing to form loops. Those loops may remain intact, be cut, or combine both treatments to create texture and patterns. A bonding layer secures the yarn, and a secondary backing adds stability. Color may be introduced into the fiber itself or applied at later manufacturing stages.

Understanding fibers and pile

Common fibers include nylon and polyester; other options include triexta, polypropylene and wool. Each has different characteristics, and treatments also affect performance. Cut pile offers exposed yarn ends; loop pile keeps loops intact; cut-and-loop combines both for a patterned surface. Yarn twist and density influence how well a carpet holds its appearance.

Why homeowners choose it

Carpet adds softness and helps soften the sound of footsteps. It is a popular choice for bedrooms and comfortable living areas. Texture, pattern and color can change the feel of a room, so viewing samples in your own lighting is useful.

What to consider before choosing

Match the carpet to traffic, pets and cleaning habits. Some loops can snag on claws. Spills need prompt attention, and regular vacuuming and manufacturer-recommended cleaning matter. Cushion should meet the carpet manufacturer’s specifications; the softest or thickest pad is not always the right match.
