Laminate
A wood-inspired floor made from bonded layers.

What is laminate flooring?
Laminate creates a wood-inspired appearance using a decorative printed layer over a dense wood-fiber core. A transparent surface layer protects the design. It differs from engineered hardwood, which has real wood on its surface, and from vinyl flooring, which uses a different core system.
How it is constructed and made
A typical board includes a balancing backing, high-density fiberboard core, decorative paper and protective resin-based overlay. Manufacturers bond the layers under heat and pressure. Texturing can help the surface resemble wood grain. The boards are cut and their edges shaped, commonly into a click-lock profile.
Why homeowners choose it
Laminate offers many wood looks and often a strong resistance to everyday surface wear. It can be a good option for busy living spaces when the selected product suits the room. Appearance, comfort, sound and performance vary, so compare actual samples and specifications.

Understanding water claims
Some laminates are water-resistant or carry a waterproof surface warranty under specified conditions. Those claims are product-specific. Wood-fiber cores may swell if moisture reaches them, and spills, seams, perimeter sealing and moisture from below all deserve attention. Check room approvals and warranty conditions before using laminate in a wet area.
Installation and everyday care
Many laminates install as floating floors, with boards connected to each other rather than fastened to the subfloor. A flat, dry base, the correct underlayment and required expansion space are important. Vacuum or sweep away grit, use approved cleaning products and avoid excess water. Unlike real wood, the printed surface cannot be sanded and refinished.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Which rooms are approved? What does the water warranty cover? Is underlayment attached or separate? What transitions and expansion spaces are required? We can help compare laminate with LVP and engineered hardwood for your home.
